There was a private channel on Roku awhile, and before it was taken down for copyright claims, I began watching Dark Shadows, first airing in 1966. I saw it when I was a kid and my mom watched it. I think I liked Quentin, the werewolf. Pretty sure I thought he was cute. I remember thinking how the show was all so very chatty, just talk talk talk like most soaps.

I've managed to find another source for the show now. I've read how the show took off once Barnabas the vampire was introduced. But to me, the best part so far (and this is quite a project, watching it--there's around 1,200 episodes) is the very first story line. It's a gothic tale in moody black and white, and explores a murder on the grounds of the Collins estate. It gets crazier after that, very fast, but this first, quiet story worked best for me. I'm pretty sure most fans of the show wouldn't agree with that. There was that Barnabas craze which I just don't get. I love vampires, but ... nah.

And good God, now I'm into the story line covering Frankenstein and briefly, I think, Dorian Gray, and Jesus they're painful. I'm not quite sure why I'm watching at this point, and this comes from a person who appreciates camp and bad acting and fun.

My favorite characters remain Roger Collins and Elizabeth Collins, though I'm fond of others as well. Angelique drives me kind of nuts, all quivery voice and what I might be wrongly interpreting as the actress thinking she's da bomb.

Still fascinated, somehow, somewhat, even though kind of not--being tired of the stupidity.

The Adam character (the Creature) has gesticulated and moaned and made sobby noises enough that I must needs mix another drink at this point to get through it.;)

Oh shit, Caroline's voice has gone just as wobbly as Angelique's. Such a mod girl, that Caroline (and also a brat).

Oh wait--one other thing I was kind of into--when Barnabas and Willy were first together, and Barnabas was so cruel and Willy so cringy--was somehow, for me, unavoidably slashy. Willy was a really terrible character at his introduction (still is, mostly), and actually hard to watch because of his anger and the way he bullied women. But he sure knows how to let the alpha dog lord it over him. It's violent and dark and so-not-right.

Later on, the show became more concerned with showing Barnabas in a sympathetic light. Willy left, and when he returned that dynamic was lost.

You know, I did start writing a little in the latter part of the year. Definitely not thrilled with the low low word count, but! C and I came through for each other for our annual yuletide story exchange. I'm very happy (and relieved)--that one means a lot to me. We've been going for 5 years now.

(Currently we've got our a03 memberships locked down, restricted to people who are already members for personal reasons, but we'll probably be able to lift that before too long)

Here's C's story for me, her first time writing Wynonna Earp (syfy) based on my prompt. Read the labels if you need warnings, please.
Toxic to the Touch (Wynonna Earp/Doc Holliday)
The prompt: Doc is gravely injured--to the point of death, if that were possible. Wynonna fucks him anyway. (Featuring a morally deficient Wynonna, taking what she wants.)

My story for C, and my first time writing Justified (FX). Again, read the labels if you need warnings.
A Soul's a Fair Trade (Raylan Givens/OMC)
The prompt: One of the (many) reasons that Raylan couldn't make peace with Arlo was because when he was fifteen, Arlo caught him in the middle of a blackberry patch with Garner Pruitt doing things he shouldn't have been doing with another boy. Garner is all grown up now with a grown up drug habit and he just traded Boyd a story about Raylan's past for a quick hit.

copied from The Humane Society of the Tennessee Valley
Today is Giving Tuesday, a global day of giving fueled by people who want to give back to causes that matter most to you. However, on this Giving Tuesday, the East Tennessee area specifically Sevier County has been inundated with wildfires and over 14,000+ people and animals had to evacuate Gatlinburg & parts of Pigeon Forge.

One of our partner shelters: Sevier County Humane Society (SCHS) was right in the path of the fires and had to evacuate 49 animals last night. Humane Society of the Tennessee Valley was able to take in 28 animals and the others went to Smoky Mountain Animal Clinic in Seymour.

So on this day of giving we ask that you show your support and give what you can because we still do not know the status of their facility and there will be numerous displaced animals from those in the area who had to leave their homes & animals. 100% of these funds will go to Sevier County Humane Society.

Help make this #GivingTuesday a success for animals. Whether big or small, the gift you make today will have an impact for helping animals during this difficult time and if you so wish you can also contribute to HSTV so we can continue to assist the animals that we took in and help them find loving & forever homes.

updated: one bit of good news -- the Ripley's Aquarium with over 10,000 animals is safe, though it wasn't looking like it last night. This from the Ripley's site:
For the safety of our employees and guests, all of our Attractions will remain closed until the evacuation has lifted. We have a team of Marine Biologists and Life Support Experts inside the Aquarium and are happy to report that the animals are safe.

For a full statement, please click here.

I posted this in 2014--a hike I took with my kids to the top of the Chimneys. It had meaning for me. The Smoky Mtns have been a backdrop to my life. I've been here so many times.

and tonight it looks like this:

I am heartsick. We've had almost no rain for a month. The air's bad. Wind kicked up today. Gatlinburg's burning, and Ripley's Aquarium was surrounded by fire hours ago. Over 10,000 animals there, my God. I'm fixated on it, and horrified.

And my daughter's girlfriend may have lost her home there tonight, though thankfully, oh so thankfully, her family and her animals are safe.

Tonight it finally began to rain, but not enough.

S&H noms

I started to post this at the end of my last post, but I want it to stand on its own.  I didn't expect or imagine the noms, but I appreciate them very, very much, S&H fandom. Wonderful surprise! I know I'm too dark for some of you, but evidently right for others. (Goldilocks, anyone?)

I guess I'm just working it all out. That's all:)

I looked for something I'd posted before on LJ and instead read my older posts, taken in by the passing years.

Fandom's been important to me, off and on, since I was pre-teen. Only I didn't know to call it fandom. I didn't know about secretive fiction magazines and snail-mail exchanges and the like. I missed it, but am nonetheless glad of its existence, and that it grew. Then the internet came, and the separate legs of fandom kicked and struggled, sprung up new, grew or died. Maybe not died, exactly--the thing about fandoms is they can be revived years later--a DVD gets first release, new fans come online... I've not seen a fandom flourish once it's slowed, but the fans trickling in afterward add to the narrative.

Weren't we all told to get our head out of the TV at some point? As if the places our brains go to after having seen an inspiring TV show or movie, or after having read a book, isn't important. Keeping your imagination alive in the face of all the mundane bullshit in our ordinary lives is more than important. It's imperative.

Anything creative has to be important, isn't it? Stories we tell each other, things we've pieced together that come from inspiration of all kinds: art, folktales, fairytales, pop culture, all of it brightness that leads our brains to imagine so many paths and struggles and solutions and loves. Of course, stories and art come from other places, too--from surviving very bad things. We work it out on paper and screen and canvas.

Or it comes from both places, or other places. It's about our journeys.

People who don't get into fandom point at us, and they don't understand, but they can't make it unimportant.

Pretty much a place-holder, really, but here if anyone wants to know. I'm lamia over there:)

Made some nominations, primarily for art, for the Starsky & Hutch Marion Kelly awards.Loved checking out favorites, old and new, and discovered a few more. I'm looking forward to reading some of the nominated fiction, too, and am interested in checking out the new authors.

Also loved the SPN bloopers, and love them even more every time I watch ANY other show's bloopers. The cast is just seemingly so at ease and looks like they're having lots of fun. I downloaded these from youtube via http://www.onlinevideoconverter.com/video-converter

I haven't posted in a long time. Personal life has changed, etc. Thing is, I love LJ, always have despite the great lack of readability for longer fan fictions (always a big draw for me--fiction, that is). Still, it feels more casually personal than anything else by far, and so a real comfortable fit for me (yes, twitter, tumblr, I'm looking at you--you're lovely and shiny and useful, but LJ has always been a melting pot of memes, stories, blogs, photos, you name it, that I'm most drawn toward.) Anyway.

Dropping in for one thing (for now). To reiterate for my beloved Cass:

Snow day here, though the husband made it safely in to work - and I just sort of randomly thought of this:)

I think maybe mine is A Snake, a Blue Blazer and a Girl Once Lost for a Dark Blue story I wrote for Yuletide. Though WIld, Wild Zombieland is kinda catchy? (That was also for Yuletide - a story about Lonesome Dove and zombie cows)

Post the first line of the last 20 fics posted, newest first.
saw this from smalltrolven and decided to give it a try. Cheer myself up after a terrible review of Beneath the Neon Moon at Audible, maybe:) These are in order posted, not necessarily written - I posted some older stories at a03.

18. I died in Sumeria. Curses and Brown Suede Shirts (Hercules: the Legendary Journeys)

19. Dean's clothes were in rags, black and purple bruises over his skin, smears of dried blood swooping over his body like kite tails flipping on a high breeze. Like Always (Supernatural)

20. Here I am, imprisoned with this creature I have made. A Perfect Form (Illuminated) (Frankenstein: the True Story)

uh...looking at this, I see I've used "afterward" a couple of times as a hook to get a reader (hopefully) wondering "after what?" There's some short sentences there for punch until there's...not:)

Cass and I watched this because Amazon recommmended it to her - it's a silly, sweet, simple yet heartfelt movie. Narrated by Boy George about pretty boys who are wolves and as such as not accepted into normal society.

The Wolves of Kromer (1998 movie) - clips at youtube - I don't think the whole movie is up?

or if you have Amazon Prime it's free
kassidy62: nightwing (Default)
She gave me the double whammy this time - posted me an Avengers story and bonused me with the ASJ story I've been wanting her to send out into the world:)

The Alias Smith & Jones story I mentioned some time ago that Cass wrote for me. Now I can share!
You Go Your Way and I'll Go Mine
Post "Something to Get Hung About", the boys separate and bad things happen.

She also posted me an Avengers story (movie related; Steve/Tony) that I love but am also quite frustrated with (you'll see why if you read it)
Eidolon
Tony yanked hard at the chains, producing noise but no useful result. He didn’t know how long he’d been hanging there, naked and blindfolded, but it felt like a long time. His arms and shoulders were aching and his calves were cramping. It was bad enough that he was hanging in the dark like a side of beef, but they'd also drugged him. They must have because he was hard and aching and completely unable to get any relief. As torture went, it was pretty damn effective.
