Moonlight: some thoughts
Oct. 6th, 2007 08:56 amA few of you on my flist didn't finish watching the first episode, you disliked it so much. Some of you do like it. I've watched two episodes and I can't make up my mind whether to keep watching it or not.
The old fashioned Boy Has Loved Girl Since Forever holds true here, otherworldly vampire happenings aside. I actually sort of liked that approach - I think because in the context of a vampire show, it's something different, like when I wrote a fan fiction story for a gay show and put het sex in it (Cass says I'm subversive:). But liking the approach and keeping my attention are two different things, and the jury is definitely still out.
SOME SPOILERS MAY FOLLOW:
Last night's episode, another interesting take: vampire as junkie. The actor did an excellent job - he felt he was a monster, his shame was palpable. When Blondie Girl (don't know her name) found him, he was in the floor sucking down blood from a plastic bag in a sort of grotesque fashion. He's like, Hutch on heroin. "Please don't look at me," he said, and I really felt for him.
The problem is, I almost forgot he's supposed to be a vampire in the episode, even though of course there are numerous references or scenes where you're reminded. Still, if this is an angle, to make him feel so normal to the viewer - I'm not sure it's working. Or maybe it is and I don't like it. And I personally don't like the pale contacts - I think the "startling eyes" effect is overdone.
