good lord, I signed up. I have no idea what I'm doing, or anything really about it. Can I tell what fandoms I put down or do I need to wait? I'll wait unless someone tells me different. me
You can reveal what fandoms you requested and even post your entire request here, in case someone on your flist wants to write you an extra story.
You generally shouldn't reveal the fandoms you offered, although nobody's going to track you down and kill you if you do. Once I have my assignment, I'll sometimes make reference to things I offered that *aren't* what I have to write.
You definitely don't reveal your actual assignment :) (Although you can hint, because that's half the fun!)
Hope that helps. Feel free to ask any other questions. I think this will be my, uh, fourth Yuletide year? Something like that.
thank you! this is dumb and I'm prepared to suck up for anything I didn't read carefully, but do you usually write ONE story/get one story or is it more? Like all four?
You only write one story and you usually get one story, although you might get more. There's a whole last-minute rush thing in which people can write extra stories, but don't worry about that for now :D
Your assignment will list three or four requests, you only have to write one. You'll most likely only match on one fandom, anyway!
Basically, the challenge requires you to offer to write in at least four different fandoms from the nominated list. You also request the three or four fandoms from which you'd like to receive a story. When signups close, you will receive your seekrit assignment. You then have to write a 1,000 word min story in one of the fandoms of your assigned person (it does not necessarily have to be one of the fandoms you offered, BTW; as long as it's one requested by your giftee). In turn, you will receive a story of your own.
When selecting fandoms, you also select characters from the pre-determined list. You are only obligated to include the characters you offered for (so don't offer "any" unless you're really comfortable with that). Your recipient will possibly write a "Dear YT writer" post with some details for their "dream story," and while it would be great if you can accommodate his/her preferences, it's not mandatory. Their fandom, the characters, 1,000+ words. That's the requirement.
About the "Dear YT writer" post--you may want to write one for your writer. Post it on your LJ, and link to it here. It'll show up on this spreadsheet, where your writer can find you easily (and vice versa also).
There are lots more details on the Yuletide FAQs page. I would also recommend watching the LJ yuletide_admin and yuletide comms for announcements and information (and more squee!).
I'm no expert (this is just my second YT), but if you have more questions, I'd be glad to help if I can.
(Psst--I saw Charmed and Dantes Cove on the list. And ASJ, of course *g*)
Did I mention how excited I am that you want to play? *dances you*
I am SO GLAD you'll be there with me! Thanks for the advice, particularly the Dear YT writer thing. I will fix my entry for that!
I didn't ask or offer Dante's or Charmed, but you bet I'll be reading some of them. My old fandoms, ah. In particular, I do love Dante's, still. So ridiculous. But there are some that just stick with you, that I want to write more, you know?
There is just something so happy-making about seeing that other folks still remember the old fandoms and show them some love.
Some folks will write extra stories after they do their assigned one, just for fun. Some also pinch hit when there are defaults. There is also Yuletide Madness, the last-minute push to make sure everyone gets a story. So even if you didn't sign up to write a particular fandom, you still can, if you're so moved. (not trying to be a PITA, just saying.)

Date: 2010-11-13 07:05 pm (UTC)I haven't filled out the form yet (the AO3 server is running reeeeally slow with all the YTers signing up), but there's a walkthrough vid here: http://community.livejournal.com/yuletide_admin/106124.html. The signup form is here: http://archiveofourown.org/collections/yuletide2010/signups/new.
