3.16 SPN thoughts

I know this has been DONE DONE DONE. But I just saw the episode last night. And my thoughts -
If Ruby was telling the truth about Sam's abilities, then Dean prevented himself from being saved. Not arguing against his good intentions and strength of character - in fact the opposite - but I'm saying regardless, he's the one that cut off any possibility of saving himself. All in the name of his Holy Grail (keeping Sammy safe) and also maybe in the name of halting the martyr tendencies making them so vulnerable to the demons (and yeah, the idea is sound, makes sense, though I still think that they're pretty much only paying lip service to that one when the chips come crashing down).
Someone else's commentary (I've forgotten who) said they weren't pleased with what they called Sam's dithering. One of the things I actually worried about and felt was really important was that Sam appear decisive and determined and willing to go the distance when it came time to save his brother, I think mainly because after S2 Sam's big giant brainery thoughts seem obscured to me - he's holding all that guilt and feeling inside about what his brother has done to save him after Dean said, "don't you be mad at me." But I wasn't disappointed in Sam in this episode at all. I saw him trying to act, wanting to act and in fact desperate to act, but respecting Dean's wishes about what he was willing to pay (or have his brother pay) in order to stay alive. And to me, that's just Sam's utter belief and faith in Dean, same as usual, made all the more touching when I remember the contrast of Sam and his father and their relationship.
I do think that Sam's treading his own slippery slope at this point (like wanting to believe in that immortality shit which was so clearly warped and wrong, and being ready to bleed an innocent in Mystery Spot) because he's wanting so badly to save his brother. It's like his brother is discovering the costs of all their self-sacrifice just when Sam's losing all perspective about it.
Is there anyone Sam loves left in the whole world that he won't have to see die? At what point will he completely lose his shit because of it? And why on God's earth did he have to watch Dean BEING TORN APART in front of him?
Is Dean actually dead? There's been discussions on LJ apparently about when the camera zooms into Dean's pupil. Are we in his subconscious or is he in hell?
I don't understand why Dean and any other people who make deals with the devil see their loved ones faces go all black and writhy and horrific?
About when Lilith actually got into and inhabited Ruby. She said 'not long' when asked, right? I honestly thought it was still Ruby in there when she said she wouldn't want to see her worst enemy go through what Dean was going through. Somehow it seemed like a very human comment, and if Ruby is still connected to her humanity in some way it'd make sense that she'd say that. It's my feeling that Lilith was in her when she asked Sam to give her the knife, not much before that if at all.
So Lilith tried to throw the great big white death light at Sam, and Sam didn't die. He barely flinched. Didn't even seem to know he'd repelled her. And then was totally impervious when she tried to push him away with a gesture. What does this mean? Are his powers (whatever they may be) still dormant or did Lilith trying to kill him somehow activate them? How powerful do you have to be to unconsciously disarm someone like her? What the hell does this mean for Sam and is there any way it can be a good thing (aside from saving Dean of couse)?
Regardless of what you think of the effects from the last scene, Dean's face is sheer agony, and I nearly swallowed my tongue when he called out for Sam. So scared, so alone, so much pain, and his gut reaction is for Sam to come and save him even after just telling Sam yes, you are going to let me go to hell.
Damn that hurt. Save him NOW!

Date: 2008-05-20 05:16 pm (UTC)Dean told Sam they had to stop sacrificing themselves for each other. What Dean saw for the second when he glimpsed Sam must have scared him pretty bad. I guess he thought if Sam gave in to the demon that he would not be able to come back.
I was definitely suspicious of Ruby as soon as Dean tells them that Lilith was not in the little girl anymore.
It's gonna be a long summer.
