We in the S&H club have a roaming Fandom Mother who came to visit me yesterday and today. Now me, I'm insufferably ill at ease and shy and generally anti-social, but no one can resist (nor should they) the power of Mama Bird, aka that Pinkest of Flamingos. Biggest heart around, big opinions to match, and you just can't help but be swept up by her friendship. Plus I think she made My Girl happy (you know who you are).

If this is what fandom is intended to be - this complete support and the kind of "I get you" thing - this is very fine stuff, so many many thanks to the Feathery One - we always have clicked, somehow.

Kimber and Moon (and Jen, right?), hope you enjoy your upcoming visit!

... so you wouldn't think I was stalking you, or something.

I knew what you meant, that Flamingo typifies the ideal of fandom -- accepting everyone as they are, being endlessly helpful, and so on -- but most people never experience anything even close to this, so what point is the ideal, unless people actually try to live up to it, instead of just congratulating themselves on their lovely ideals? Perhaps fandom should be like the ideal, but it isn't, and we have to live with what fandom is, whether we like it or not, or get out.

I had a whole rant written about what fandom is, in response to the racism kerfuffle and so on, but I'm going to post that on my LJ, where I can monitor any responses. I doubt there will be any, because no one actually reads my LJ. You can come over and comment if you like. I won't call you names, even if you call me names, because I never do that. Nor will I come over here and attack you. I'll unscreen your comments, and respond to them in a thoughtful and polite, if rather blunt, fashion.

I wanted to let you know about this, because I'll be mentioning things you said in your post. Not, I want to assure you, in any demeaning fashion. I won't mention you by name, and I'll 'vague things up for you' as Buffy said to Giles once. I just wanted to let you know ahead of time, in case you happened to read what I wrote, and took it as a veiled attack on you.

I'm usually pretty quick to reply, too, so I wouldn't think you're a stalker. I definitely don't call people names, either - that type of behavior is very unpleasant for me (just so you know).

I have had a lot of mixed feelings about fandom and I still do, very much so, and so the visit was important to me in that it made me remember those feelings of excitement over the same fandom, the companionship and unity. I have a few friends in fandom that have actually met that ideal and then some.
