I don't think it's the actual act of doing it that's lonesome. Maybe the one-sided nature of it, maybe like talking to your teenager about something hugely important (to you at least), and in the end not knowing how much he/she listened/cared/thought.
Of course, some authors get lots of letters that let them know what the reader thought--more than they can respond to, practically speaking.
