This post is about S&H vids and where to find some of them. Why? Because of this post: makesmewannadie
What is your single favorite vid in your fandom?

The response for S&H? One vid, no linkage. One. A theory was offered as to the older fandoms and why they didn't have more suggested vids: that maybe all our vids reside on videotape! Which, yes, we've got a lot of videos that came out on videotape, but we're not lost and forgotten, vid-wise. The fandom is alive and well and it produces video.

IMO, S&H is regarded as ugly in terms of vidding, and don't get me wrong, there's a point there, in that there's no real special effects and no fancy camera work to speak of. Modern tv shows blow S&H film off the map in terms of clarity and color and the aforesaid, frankly. So what do we have? I mean, really? How about this:

Honestly, I'd wager the lack of response on this one is mostly due to the facts that 1) there are virtually no S&H fans other than the one who responded (at least, that I recognize) on her friends or friend-of lists, and 2) she doesn't even list S&H has an interest. This means that, in general, the S&Hers on LJ are probably completely UNAWARE that the question has even been posed. If she'd posted to, say, the vidding community, the post would get a lot more diverse traffic, I think.

Buuuut, it's still nice to have all the links in one place like this :D

You're most likely right, but honestly, I don't feel there's much encouragement and less respect within the vidding community regarding S&H. Therefore, posting:)

You should post it somewhere with wider traffic, then! Like the vidding comm itself. I mean, most of the people on your flist probably are already somewhat familiar with S&H vids online, know some or all of the locations you mentioned - so the post in your personal LJ might be a little like preaching to the choir. But think of the people you could draw in from this type of post in a not-so-selective demographic. I mean, that's how you got *me* after all ;)

Actually, You've Got a Friend doesn't make my top faves list, pretty much because James Taylor's voice (save, oh, 2 songs of his) gives me the willies ;)

SH is a *wonderful* fandom to vid, I enjoy it very much. And some of the vids you have linked to prove that it is possible to make vids that stay with you, that are powerful, sad, funny, whatever you want.

S&H is older fandom and so we ain't cool. One of the reasons I haven't said a word to the girl at You Tube about my vids is I'm a sneaky pimp. The girls that are looking at them over there or commenting are between 14-20, mostly. Passing the torch, see?

Nice to have these all in one place. And what our fandom doesn't have in special effects, we make up for in screensots;) I was commenting before about why some newer vidders might find it harder to vid SH and I really do think that alot of our vids (not all, but alot) are layered in such a way that you have to know the importance of the scene in the surrounding canon to get the plot of the vid instead of, like I've seen in other fandoms' vids, the visual is seperated from the canon to create a whole new plot/universe.

Oh, but I don't think it's required to know the canon events surrounding certain scenes in order to "get" the vids in SH. After all, I was perfectly content to do nothing but watch vids totally out of context for 2 and a half months before I finally broke down and got the first season dvds. While I will say that some vids take on a different emotional slant once you *do* know what certain things mean within canon, I still think a lot of them - most of them, actually - can stand on their own and not lose their impact.

I know that in terms of finding interesting footage outside of the boys, things can get old fast. If you want flash, you gotta work for it.

Well, I think another HUGE reason for the absence of S&H vids was that I don't have too many S&H fans on my flist, since it's not one of my fandoms. Moonie was telling me exactly that - that you just don't appear to have a lot of S&H fans on your flist. I think my response was more of a built-up thing for me in that I think there's a certain amount of negative perception of the older fandoms. For example, PR Zed said in one of her LJ posts one time (paraphrasing) that *no,* she wasn't going to give up her old fandoms anytime soon - almost as if she'd been asked to leave the old behind and come to the new shinies.

I've done videos for cons before for S&H and pretty much the reaction is, er, very muted or nonexistent, as opposed to comments on LJs re: the newer fandom vids (which very well may be, uh, cuz my vids are lacking - certainly the older ones - but hey;)

Anyway, nothing was meant personally - your post and the response just made me think about these things:) Thanks for taking the time to respond, I think I will post a link at your LJ.

Thank You!! I'm a longtime S&H fan and a vid fan, and I've been avidly collecting S&H vids as they come online (tapes too, but that's another post *g*). It also drives me nuts the way that S&H is underrepresented - and undervalued - in some vidding circles. Not all mind, but definitely amongst the "oohh, look at the shiny new fandom de jour" crowd. Of course, some of that was due to not having DVD source, as vidders have become increasingly picky about pristine source and many of the old tapes are showing wear. But with the DVDs out, here's hoping more will return to their S&H love and put out some new vids - or remaster some old classics.

I thought I'd pretty well scoured the net for S&H vids, but you had two vidders that are new to me (Dunalqua and Mirien). Alas, they appear to only be available via YouTube, which means that as a dial-up user, those vids are effectively off-limits to me. Dial-up connections won't support streaming vids in a watchable manner and there is no easy way to download vids off YouTube - though I just recently got links to two different third-party software programs that are supposed to be able to capture vids off YouTube. (Unfortunately, according to those who've tried, the vid quality for YouTube is often poor, due to size & compression issues). Since I can't watch vids on YouTube, I don't bother searching there, but I think I'll have to start - if only to gather names and see if any ever end up with a website that I can access.

The new trend to put up vids only on YouTube is so very damn frustrating! I do wish that vidders who are choosing to use YouTube would, at the very least, also offer their vids via one of the many temporary host sites like FileFront, SendSpace, MegaUpload, YSI (or the dozen or more other options) - that would allow people to download the vids. Or even - in my ideal world - have a website.

Gianduja Kiss does have a website, thankfully, though she is also putting her vids up on YouTube. Would you please add her website to the list? That way people can download her vids, not just watch them online.

I'll add the link to Gianduja Kiss' here on my LJ tonight or possibly tomorrow - also want to ask some of the S&H vidders at You Tube about posting their vids elsewhere. I've got an idea or two about how they could do it, too.

You Tube's quality is in no way controllable, far as I can see. I just tested it myself with two vids.

As far as the vidders, if anything works out, I'll get back in touch:)

And please, anytime you find a new S&H vidder, I'd love to know who they are. One of these days I'd love to get hold of some of the older vids, too.

Great - I'll do that in the next day or two as soon as I get home from house & pet-sitting. I'll email you regarding info on some of the older vids, though as you're more plugged into S&H fandom, you'll likely have it already.

And yes, please do pursure the YouTube vidders to see if they will post their vids somewhere so that they can be downloaded; there are a ton of free temporary hosting sites available. I'll add my pleas, as soon as I actually look at the mechanics of commenting there or figure out if I can email them without signing up for a YouTube account.
