There's a not-small part of me that would be absolutely thrilled to see the show end like this. I'm not sure what that says about me.
In my experience, you sound like a fan of horror, at least psychological horror. Lots of other people want the happy ending, but some people like the edge and the darkness and angst, you know? I actually write it better than I can receive it passively with characters I care about, like these guys. For example, In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida just about KILLED me. I loved it, though. It would break my heart if the show ended this way, but that's not to say I wouldn't enjoy it on some level, if only because it dared to go that dark.
I wish it were 500 pages, even though part of its beauty is how stark and pared down it is.
