I just re-read your post and this struck me. That's what I was ranting about on my own LJ a few moments ago. Though maybe 'ranting' is too strong a term. IMO, the best stories come from a situation in which the story won't 'go away', and keeps you awake at night. IMO, a story that comes from the heart or the soul or whatever, will grab the reader and involve them as much as the writer. I find that kind of fan fiction sadly lacking in fandom these days. Hmmm. I don't know the novel you reference, and I've never been a fan of King, to say the least, but maybe I'll go read the story, nonetheless. :-)))
